5 dead after crash in Minneapolis, suspect in custody
Four women and a girl are dead after a vehicle fleeing from the Minnesota State Patrol crashed into their car, officials say.
A trooper on Interstate-35 northbound by 46th Street in Minneapolis saw a car speeding around 10 p.m. on Friday. A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said the driver was driving over 90 mph.
Minneapolis police say that before the trooper could initiate a traffic stop, the car “immediately” exited the highway and ran a red light at the intersection of Lake Street and 2nd Avenue, where it hit the car carrying the five victims.
A man then ran from the vehicle but was later taken into custody by the Minneapolis Police Department, according to authorities.
All five victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Dar Al Farooq Center released the names of the victims in a fundraiser: Sabiriin Ali, Sahra Gessade, Salma Abdikadir, Sagal Hersi and Siham Adam.
The suspect was brought to HCMC for evaluation and as of Saturday afternoon has not been released, according to an MPD spokesperson.
A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS photographer captured crime scene tape at the scene. Minneapolis Fire and Police Departments can also be seen at the site of the crash.
