Negotiations continue as SPPS teachers get closer to strike deadline

Negotiations between the St. Paul Public School District and the union representing teachers continued on Sunday, but the two sides have yet to come to a final agreement.

The St. Paul Federation of Educators said several "tentative agreements were reached" Sunday evening, but "no significant movement" occurred on several key issues. The union is pushing for additional mental health, multilingual and special education staff, among other resources.

“District leaders don’t understand the urgency of these need. Educators do — we see them every day in our schools," SPFE President Nick Faber said in a statement. “Our students can’t wait any longer.” 

Mediation will resume on Monday, and a teacher strike is set to begin on Tuesday if a settlement is not reached.

Negotiation began last May, and the SPFE filed for mediation in November.
