Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California has spent most of the week trying and failing to become the next speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
So far 20 Republicans have stonewalled him through 11 votes across three days. ABC News reports McCarthy has made concessions, including adding more far-right Republicans to the House Rules Committee and allowing votes on term limits and border security.
But until a speaker is selected, Congress is shut down, staff doesn’t get paid, and constituents get no services from their representatives.
