Man dead after overnight Minneapolis fire

A man was pronounced dead after he was carried out of a burning building by Minneapolis firefighters early Thursday morning, according to news release from the Minneapolis Fire Department.

Fire crews were dispatched at about 2:15 a.m. for a general fire alarm and reports of smoke coming from the first floor of an apartment in the 1500 block of Portland Avenue. They arrived to find light smoke on the first floor and alarms sounding, according to the department.

Firefighters then forced their way into an apartment and found the man in the entry way to the unit. Responders then performed CPR and requested additional life-saving help, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene by Hennepin County Medical Center paramedics.

The news release states that firefighters found black smoke inside the apartment and a bed that was on fire but burned itself out before fire crews arrived. There was no fire damage beyond the apartment unit.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

As of this time, the man’s age and identity haven’t been released.
