St. Olaf football player charged in fatal Chicago crash
A St. Olaf football player has been charged in connection to a fatal crash in Chicago.
ABC 7 reports that 18-year-old Kendall Sprouts faces reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving charges.
According to police, officers had stopped a Hyundai Sonata in the city’s South Loop neighborhood Sunday night when it then tried to make a U-turn and was hit by Sprouts. Sprouts was speeding at the time of the crash, ABC 7 reports.
The driver of the Hyundai died in the crash.
Sprouts’ attorney Donna Rotunno told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, “It was a tragic accident but he’s a student, a great kid. There was no drinking involved, no drugs involved. We’re gonna hope for a good outcome.”
Sprouts, who is from Chicago, is a freshman wide receiver on the St. Olaf football team.
His school bio notes that, in high school, he was on the track and field team for two years and the football team for four years, earning all-conference honors. He was also an honor roll student and a member of the school’s National Honor Society chapter.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Sprouts was the driver of the vehicle pulled over by police. It has since been updated.
