Bloomington man killed in crash near MSP Airport

UPDATE 10/13 – Authorities have identified the man who was killed Wednesday on Highway 5 near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Toyota Highlander was westbound on Highway 5 when it left the roadway to the right and hit the inside of a bridge at Post Road shortly before 6:15 p.m.

Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop against a cable barrier.

Thursday morning, authorities identified the driver of the Highlander as 82-year-old Patrick James Gilligan of Bloomington.

No one else was traveling with Gilligan, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Road conditions were dry at the time of the crash, which caused the temporary closure of the southbound lanes of Highway 5.

Authorities haven’t said why the vehicle left the roadway.


INITIAL REPORT 10/12 – Authorities have closed down southbound lanes of Highway 5 near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport due to a fatal crash Wednesday night.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash happened near the exit for Post Road.

Minnesota Department of Transportation cameras showed major traffic delays in the area. Drivers are being rerouted around the crash site.
