A library in St. Paul will now honor the memory of Marny Xiong.
Xiong was the former chair of the St. Paul Public Schools Board of Education when she died of COVID-19 in June 2020. She was 31 years old.
The Marny Xiong Memorial Library was dedicated Thursday night at Washington Technology Magnet School. Her impact on the Hmong community will also be remembered through a mural unveiled at the ceremony.
The mural was painted by local artist MK, who was also commissioned for a mural of Olympic gold medalist gymnast and St. Paul native Suni Lee.
During the unveiling, Xiong’s mother walked up and embraced her daughter’s likeness on the library wall.
“This really is a creation of love, a creation of caring. I’m so proud of this,” said Board of Education Chair Jim Vue, who took Marny’s place on the school board when she passed.
Xiong, a lifelong St. Paul resident, graduated in 2007 from Arlington High School, the building that is now Washington Tech.
