Richfield police arrest 2 teens in connection to shooting outside homecoming football game
Richfield police have arrested two teenage boys in connection to the shooting outside the Richfield homecoming football game, according to a department update Sunday morning.
Police say on Saturday night, officers arrested a 15-year-old Richfield High School student they suspect to be the shooter.
Earlier on Saturday, police arrested a 16-year-old, who is a former Richfield High School student, on suspicion of instigating the fight that led to shots being fired.
Formal charges are expected early this week, according to police. The two teens are being held in the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.
As previously reported, a staff member alerted an officer working the game that there was a group of people who had been turned away from the gates and appeared to be waiting for the game to finish outside the north end of the stadium.
The officer heading over to check on the group heard two shots and saw people scatter from the area. Two young men ages 18 and 21 were found shot by the northeast entrance to the stadium, according to police.
Before the game livestream was taken down, remote viewers witnessed players and fans running for stadium exits after the gunshots were fired.
The game was canceled with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and all homecoming weekend activities were canceled.
The two victims were originally reported to have gunshot injuries that were not life-threatening, and police say the victims are now home and recovering well.
