3 people plead guilty to charges related to 2019 Red Lake Indian Reservation murder

Three people have pleaded guilty for their involvement in killing a man and wounding another victim on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in August 2019.

Court documents state that Daniel Johnson was killed inside his home by multiple gunshots on Aug. 12, 2019. Another person was seriously wounded during the attack.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office identifies three people — 21-year-old Alexia Gah Gi Gay Mary Cutbank of Bemidji, 21-year-old Mia Faye Sumner of Duluth and 31-year-old Daniel Charles Barret of Redby — who entered the garage of Johnson’s residence armed with at least one handgun.

Cutbank fired the shots that killed Johnson and wounded the other victim, the U.S. Attorney’s Office states.

The three then left the scene of the shooting and were driven off the reservation by 50-year-old Rose Celeste Siewert of Cass Lake.

Cutbank pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting murder in the second degree and one count of aiding and abetting assault resulting in serious bodily injury on Sept. 20, 2022. Barrett pleaded guilty on Aug. 16, 2022, to one count of aiding and abetting murder in the second degree. Siewert pleaded guilty on Sept. 14, 2022, to one count of accessory after the fact.

Their sentencing dates have yet to be scheduled.

Sumner is set to go to trial on Oct. 31.
