Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day

Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day.

Seven weeks ahead of Election Day, the day is a reminder for voters to take a few minutes to check their registration status and either register to vote or update their registration, if needed.

Even for those who are already registered to vote, officials say it’s a good idea to check and make sure the registration status is correct and up to date. Voters do need to update their registration if they’ve moved or changed names since voting last.

Anyone who hasn’t voted at least once over the past four years also will need to update their voter registration by completing a new registration application.

Those eligible to vote in Minnesota must be:

• A U.S. citizen
• At least 18 years old on Election Day
• A resident of Minnesota for 20 days
• Finished with all parts of any felony sentence

While Minnesotans can wait all the way until Election Day to register, the Secretary of State’s Office encourages citizens to register ahead of time and save time at the polling place. If registering early, the deadline to register on paper is 5 p.m. on Oct. 18 and the deadline to register online is 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 18.

Registering to vote in Minnesota takes only a few minutes. Citizens will need a driver’s license or other state identification card number plus the last four digits of their Social Security number.
