School districts: More needs to be done to address hunger in children

Leaders from some of Minnesota’s largest school districts will be calling for more to be done to keep kids fed Tuesday.

Representatives of the Anoka-Hennepin, St. Paul, Osseo and Roseville School Districts will highlight how the summer of 2022 was one of the hungriest on record.

School leaders will be joined by Second Harvest Heartland and Hunger Solutions Minnesota as they plan to explain how rising prices and inflation, paired with the end of pandemic-era school meal programs, are currently straining families.

However, officials say they have a potential solution. The group is asking parents and guardians to complete the application for education benefits to see if their children are eligible for free school lunches.
