1 man dead, 2nd hospitalized after crash in South Minneapolis
A late-night fatal crash involving two vehicles in South Minneapolis is being investigated by Minneapolis police.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS was at the scene, located at East 38th Street and Portland Avenue South, around midnight Wednesday morning.
Both vehicles had heavy damage.
A police spokesperson says that the crash happened around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday night.
Officers found two men unconscious in the driver’s seats of their respective vehicles, both suffering from injuries considered to be life-threatening.
Authorities say that bystanders attempted to put out a fire that had started in one of the vehicles.
Both drivers were taken by ambulance to Hennepin Healthcare, where one of the drivers, a 33-year-old man, died from his injuries.
The second driver, a 60-year-old man, remains hospitalized.
An initial investigation by Minneapolis police indicates excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.
The identity of the man who died will be released by the Hennepin County medical examiner at a later date.
