Man pleads guilty to robbing Bloomington bank

A man pleaded guilty Monday to robbing a bank in Bloomington earlier this year.

Hennepin County court records show 41-year-old Mark Nils Johnson filed a petition to plead guilty to one count of second-degree aggravated robbery for stealing $4,100 from TopLine Credit Union on April 21.

If the prosecution accepts the terms of the plea agreement, Johnson would have to pay restitution but have his sentence stayed pending the completion of four years of probation. He would also have a charge of fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle dropped.

A criminal complaint states Johnson entered the bank wearing a hat, mask, sunglasses and a backpack and went up to one of the tellers. He passed a note to the teller that said, “Put 20s 50s and 100s in bag no alarm or I will set off bomb in backpack.” The teller gave Johnson the money, and he left the bank.

Using surveillance videos, police found a vehicle used by Johnson and traced it back to his home. Police were eventually able to find Johnson driving nearby and followed his vehicle.

That’s when officers say he began driving “evasively” and didn’t stop for police when they turned their lights on. Instead, the complaint states he began driving at speeds of 50 mph through residential areas that were marked as 30 mph zones.

Eventually, Johnson’s vehicle was stopped, and officers say they found $3,480 in cash. They also found the front portion of a ripped envelope and a baseball hat matching the one worn during the robbery in his home.

His sentencing date is set for Sept. 14.
