Family, investigators seek answers 2 years after deadly home invasion involving 76-year-old Mankato grandmother

This week marks two years since a 76-year-old Blue Earth County woman was killed in a home invasion.
Officials say Evelyn Adams was beaten and later died at the hospital.
"She was a totally innocent victim of this crime," said Jim Adams, Evelyn’s stepson. "Of course it’s a very sad time for us."
Two years ago, investigators say someone entered Adams’ home. They believe there was some sort of encounter that left the 76-year-old with serious injuries.
"The totality of the circumstance would suggest that it had to be somebody that was most likely familiar with her," said Capt. Paul Barta, with the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office.

Days later, Adams died at the hospital. Barta says they’re keeping an open mind into what happened including that this may have just started as a small theft.
"We’re not locked into a theory or the expectation that the person that Evelyn met in her home that night is inherently evil, that the intent that night was to go in and harm her," Barta said.

Even within the last few weeks, the sheriff’s office says they’re receiving and following up on tips proving it’s still on the minds of so many in this community.
"I think we did roughly 20 interviews or met with people over the last month or two," Barta said.
"I know they’re working on it diligently and doing everything they can," Adams said.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS spoke with Adams’ stepson Jim over the phone. He says regardless of what happened inside this house, he knows it’s weighing on the mind of someone.
"I can’t imagine the overpowering feeling of guilt, and hopefully remorse, but I certainly wish they’d come forward," Adams said.
Pictures help tell the story of Evelyn Adams’ love for life and her family. Now they’re all leaning on each other as they eagerly wait for closure.
"Every time my phone rings I hope it is that call. We need to get answers and closure," Adams said.
There is a reward of up to $1,000 for anyone with information leading to an arrest in the case.
