Northshore Mining to be idled until at least April 2023
Northshore Mining is expected to be idled until at least April of next year.
Hubbard Broadcasting affiliate WDIO reports the company that owns the mine, Cleveland-Cliffs, announced the update Friday morning.
The mine is in Babbitt and the plant is in Silver Bay.
Northshore Mining had been originally idled this past spring, according to WDIO. According to a notice from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), the company in May had announced plans to temporarily lay off 364 employees.
Now, an additional 89 employees have been told they’ll also be temporarily laid off, starting at some point between October and December.
The temporary layoffs are expected to stay in effect until April 2023.
According to Lourenco Goncalves, the CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs, the idling is due to less need for pellets.
