Man pleads guilty to assault charge after shooting ex-girlfriend in buttocks

A man charged with assault after shooting his ex-girlfriend nearly one year ago in the buttocks has now pleaded guilty.
According to online court documents, a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Monday turned into a plea hearing.
Fredrick Davis, 31, of Alabama pleaded guilty to one county of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon causing substantial bodily harm as part of a plea agreement Monday morning. A second charge of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon is still pending disposition, records show.
As previously reported last year, St. Paul police were called to the 400 block of Minnehaha Avenue East for multiple reports of a shooting on Aug. 19, 2021. That’s where officers found a vehicle with damage from several gunshots and spent 9mm casings on the ground nearby, according to a criminal complaint. They learned that a then-23-year-old woman had been hospitalized with a gunshot wound before police had arrived.
The woman told police at the hospital Davis had shot her, according to a complaint.

Davis’ sentencing is scheduled for the afternoon of Aug. 30.
The assault charge involving substantial bodily harm carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine, or both. The second charge of second-degree assault carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a $14,000 fine or both.
