Minneapolis Public Schools to hold in-person classes Tuesday
Minneapolis Public Schools says all classes will be in-person on Tuesday, June 21.
The district says the heat index for Tuesday does not reach the excessive heat level to close schools.
The district also says it ran ventilation systems over the weekend and overnight to help keep the buildings cool.
For teachers in buildings without air conditioning, the district is allowing them to do a number of things to try to make teaching in the heat more comfortable including: turning off classroom lights (when possible) and closing shades or blinds, limiting the use of heat-generating technology, opening windows that are not in direct sunlight, using fans, moving classes to a shaded area outside and making sure everyone stays well-hydrated, among other suggestions.
Parents are recommended to have their children wear clothing for the hot weather that fits the school dress code as well as have a hat or sunscreen if spending time outside.
MPS did not have classroom instruction on Monday due to the Juneteenth holiday.
Students attending school at MPS buildings without air conditioning had an e-learning day last Tuesday due to the excessive heat index.
