Stevens birdied the 17th hole to take him to -5 for the tournament and a share of the lead with Wetzel.
Wetzel birdied number eleven to take him to -5 for the tournament, before the rains came.
Rexing quietly crept into contention with birdies on 16 and 18 to take him to -4 for the tournament.
After a bogey on 18 for Stevens, both Stevens and Rexing went into the clubhouse at -4, forced to sweat out Wetzel’s final few holes.
With rain coming down, Wetzel bogeyed the sixteenth to drop back into a three-way tie at -4. He parred the 17th to set up final-hole drama on 18. Wetzel calmly stuck his approach on 18 to within ten feet on his second shot setting up a potential title-winning putt.
“I was watching the leaderboard on 18 and knew if I birdied the final hole that I’d win the tournament outright,” Wetzel said after the round.
His would-be winning putt slid ever-so-slightly past the left side of the hole, but Wetzeal tapped in for par to seal the three-way tie.
After the round, when asked if they would have liked to settle the tie on the course with a playoff, each champion gave a resounding ‘yes’.
But, MSHSL rules don’t allow for playoffs, rather awarding the co-championships.
