Q&A: Woodbury’s Mike Jones on transferring to join Stanford basketball program

Former Woodbury high school basketball star Mike Jones is joining the Stanford Cardinal of the PAC-12 after being in the transfer portal. Jones had a solid four year run at Davidson.

His time at Davidson peaked with the 2021-2022 season. He started all 34 games, averaging 11.8 points per game, while shooting 42.1% from 3-point range. Jones’ play helped Davidson earn an Atlantic-10 regular season championship, as well as an NCAA Tournament appearance.

We spoke with Jones before he heads out to Palo Alto, California to begin summer workouts.

A big reason why Jones is leaving Davidson is because they don’t have a graduate school program.

“Michael provides a tremendous skill set,” said Stanford head coach Jerod Haase in a press release. “He can score in a variety of ways and can defend multiple positions. He played an integral role on an NCAA Tournament team and will provide experience that will immediately lift our program.”

Jones also considered Northwestern, Alabama, and Clemson. The Gophers contacted Jones early in the process, but never showed serious interest.

Jones continues a recent run of Twin Cities players joining the Cardinal. He follows in the footsteps of Reid Travis and Tyrell Terry. Both starred at DeLaSalle high school.
