Treatments to control mosquito larvae population being applied in metro area

Helicopters will be out Friday and throughout the next few weeks as treatments are applied in the Twin Cities metro area to help control the mosquito larvae population.

The treatment is applied as helicopters fly at low altitudes and make patterns over certain areas, according to the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD).

Treatments are being applied in multiple counties, with the MMCD saying helicopters will be up in seven counties Friday, including Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties.

MMCD officials say a treatment made of dry granule or pellets that have a natural soil bacterium, or a mosquito growth regulator, is applied to wetlands and large areas of standing water. That helps prevent larvae from becoming adults.

According to the MMCD, the treatment poses no risk to human or animal health, and they do not apply liquid control materials, which target adult mosquitoes.
