Man who turned himself in for fatal Maple Grove shooting released without charges, investigation ongoing 

Police released a 30-year-old man who surrendered to them on Monday night for the fatal shooting of another man on Sunday.

No charges have been filed.

The man killed was 61-year-old William Floyd Haire of Buffalo. Maple Grove police said he was shot just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 30 and Garland Lane North before he was found on the side of an on-ramp to Interstate 94. He died from his wounds after being taken to the hospital.   

Investigators believe the road rage incident began with an argument in St. Cloud before it culminated in the fatal shooting in Maple Grove, more than 40 miles away.

A witness tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that he saw both the man who turned himself in and the eventual victim arguing in between the gas pumps at a station beforehand. He said the man who was killed became angry and pursued the driver in the other car.

“He sped out of there at a high rate of speed, almost caused an accident at the main highway there at the stop sign, pulled right out in front of three or four cars,” Daniel Hurlbut said. “Busy Easter Sunday traffic so, went around the car at the stop sign and pulled out right in front of him to chase after the suspect.”

Police say they are still investigating the case and that the man who turned himself in is still a suspect.
