Florida man pleads guilty to threatening Rep. Ilhan Omar
A Florida man has pleaded guilty to threatening Rep. Ilhan Omar.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 67-year-old David Hannon, of Sarasota, Fla., pleaded guilty to threatening a federal official on Tuesday.
He’s accused of sending Omar, D-Minn., an email with the subject line, “[You’re] dead, you radical Muslim.”
Prosecutors say Hannon also referred to Omar and three other congresswomen of color she’d appeared at a press conference with as “radical rats” and asked her if she was prepared “to die for Islam.”
“Threatening to kill our elected officials, especially because of their race, ethnicity or religious beliefs, is offensive to our nation’s fundamental values,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, said in a statement. “The Justice Department will not hesitate to prosecute individuals who violate federal laws that prohibit violent, hate-motivated threats. All elected officials, regardless of their background, should be able to represent their communities and serve the public free from hate-motivated threats and violence.”
Hannon’s sentencing date hasn’t yet been set.
