Man charged in fatal crash that killed south metro priest

A Minneapolis man has been charged in connection to a crash that killed a south metro priest last fall.

The Dakota County Attorney’s Office has charged 26-year-old Trejean Derrell Curry via warrant with criminal vehicular homicide in the death of 73-year-old Dennis Dempsey.

Authorities say around 3:30 p.m. Oct. 25, Dempsey was riding a bike on County Road 42 west of Auburn Avenue in Rosemount when he was allegedly hit by Curry’s vehicle. Dempsey was pronounced dead at the scene.

The criminal complaint states Rosemount police found Curry in the driver’s seat of a sedan-style vehicle that was stopped and partially in the westbound lane of County Road 42. Curry told officers Dempsey swerved out in front of him and he couldn’t move over or slam on his brakes because there were cars behind him and next to him.

Crash reconstruction performed by the Minnesota State Patrol showed the skid marks from Curry’s vehicle were on the shoulder of the road, not in the traffic lane. The complaint also states Curry’s driver’s license was revoked at the time of the crash.

Dempsey was a priest at the Church of the Risen Savior in Burnsville
