State Girls Hockey: Late goal gets Gentry past Maple Grove in AA Quarters

Number five seed Gentry Academy Stars (22-6-0) defeated number four seed Maple Grove Crimson (20-6-2) 2-1 in an even matchup on Thursday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul to advance into the Class AA semifinals of the Girls State Hockey Tournament.

At the end of the first period the score was 0-0. The Stars had 13 shots on goal to one shot on goal for the Crimson. The Stars won 9 of the thirteen faceoffs for the period.
Crimson senior Tia Rice hit a slapshot at 6:50 that bounced off the goalie and was hit back in by junior Stella Retrum for a goal. Rice earned the assist for a 1-0 lead over Gentry Academy. Star’s junior Jenessa Gazdik scored at 12:43 to tie the game.
In the 3rd period at 12:46 Stars junior Campbell Hegar scored off the top pipe. She was assisted by junior Riley Reeves and junior Rachel Agerter. With 1:51 left, Maple Grove pulled the goalie.
Gentry Academy ended the game with 32 shots on goal and won 32 faceoffs. While Maple Grove had 22 shots on goal and won 16 faceoffs.
Gentry Academy will take on Andover at 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Xcel Energy Center. Maple Grove will meet Brainerd in consolation play at 12:00 p.m. on Friday at TRIA Rink in St Paul.
