Minnesota Live producer, Lauren Andrego, offers some online dating apps and websites geared for people above a certain age. Taking a chance on love and a new app is the right kind of mid-life crisis.
Minnesota is one of the best states for seniors to find love, according to new research from Seniorly. The state ranks second, behind Idaho, based on the amount of single seniors, dating affordability, life expectancy and other factors.
There are many dating apps and websites devoted to older adults. Here are some of them:
–Our Time, a free app for Apple and Android devices that will eventually require a paid subscription
–Love Begins At, an online community for adults 40+. It’s free to join, but requires a paid subscription to use all features.
–Coffee Meets Bagel, a free app for Apple and Android devices.
Especially around Valentine’s Day, experts emphasize the importance of staying safe while online dating. Here are some tips, compiled by these dating sites, to spot a scam.
-The person you’re talking to “love bombs” you. If they profess their love to you very quickly or before you’ve met, or starts asking you for very personal information, it could be a scam. Listen to your gut. Block the profile if you get suspicious or uncomfortable.
-If they ask for money for travel, medical expenses or emergencies, it’s likely a scam. This is often paired with emotional manipulation. Don’t fall for it.
-If they plan to visit you, but “emergencies” keep coming up, it’s likely a scam. This is often followed by the person asking for money.
There are several steps you can take to make sure your match is legit:
-Do your research. Google their name. Search them on Facebook. Everyone is tracable on the internet. If they have a common name or you can’t find them — ask.
-If you ever have a doubt — show a friend or family member.
When the time comes to meet in person, remember these tips to stay safe:
-Meet at a public spot
-Tell a friend where you’re going and when
-Drive yourself, or have a friend drop you off and pick you up
