DPS-DVS offices to close for 2 weeks, driver’s license extensions coming

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services Division (DPS-DVS) said Friday it will close all exam stations in the state for two weeks beginning Friday to comply with Gov. Tim Walz’s executive order to stay home and help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The department also said a bill passed by the state legislature is expected to be signed by Gov. Walz when it reaches his desk, and it will give an extension for Minnesotans whose driver’s licenses or ID cards expire during the COVID-19 pandemic.
DPS said the bill extends the expiration date for any valid driver’s license, instruction permit, provisional license, operator’s permit, limited license and farm work license that would expire during the peacetime emergency, moving the expiration date to two months after the peacetime emergency ends.
On Thursday, officials also announced the state’s REAL ID deadline was extended for a year to October 2021.
Minnesotans can still renew vehicle registrations online and by mail during the peacetime emergency, so no extension will be granted for those expirations.
