17-year-old arrested in St. Cloud after pursuit in carjacked vehicle, police say

A 17-year-old was arrested Thursday night in St. Cloud after a pursuit involving a vehicle stolen from Minneapolis.

According to the St. Cloud Police Department, officers were notified at 10:53 p.m. that a vehicle stolen from Minneapolis may have been in St. Cloud. In cooperation with the vehicle’s owner, who was tracking the vehicle with GPS technology, officers were able to locate the vehicle — which Minneapolis police confirmed was stolen in a carjacking earlier Thursday.

At 11:07 p.m., St. Cloud officers found the occupied vehicle near the 300 block of 32nd Avenue North and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver fled. After a 3.6-mile, five-minute pursuit, they lost sight of the stolen vehicle.

However, police were able to relocate the parked and empty vehicle in the 1300 block of Sixth Street North soon after, according to a press release. By following fresh footprints in the snow from the vehicle to a nearby apartment building, officers were able to find and apprehend a 17-year-old from Minneapolis inside the building who they identified as the driver.

The juvenile is in custody at the Stearns County Jail and is being held on charges including fleeing police in a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property, according to the release. Officers informed MPD of the vehicle’s recovery.
