A man died Thursday night after a stabbing in St. Paul, marking the city’s 35th homicide of the year, a new single-year record.

Friday morning, St. Paul Police announced an arrest has been made. Brian Kjellberg, 50, was taken into custody and booked into Ramsey County jail. Charges are pending.

Friday afternoon the Ramsey County medical examiner identified the victim as 27-year-old Arnell Steward, of Georgia.

St. Paul Police said a caller reported an assault just before 8 p.m. Thursday in the 1700 block of East Seventh Street. There, officers found a man in his 20s suffering from a stab wound.

Officers rendered aid to the man until medics transported him to a hospital but he later died.

Investigators are working to determine what led up to the altercation but don’t believe it was a random incident.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the victim’s name and official cause of death at a later time.

The investigation remains active.
