Carter Haycraft’s tip-in late in the second period closed out the scoring as the teams exchanged mutiple offensive jabs in the third period and overtime, but couldn’t snap the deadlock.
St Thomas Academy took a 2-1 lead in the second on goals from Jack Strobel and Tommy Cronin.
While the Cadets controlled the action most of the first period, it was Nick Biersdorf giving the Zephyrs the early 1-0 lead.
Mahtomedi goalie Ben Dardis made 34 saves and stopped a first period penalty shot attempt. STA’s Jared Wright earned the attempt after being hooked from behind on a breakaway.
Carsten Lardy made 37 saves for St Thomas Academy.
Mahtomedi, the defending Class A state champions, returned home with a 6-4-1 record.
St Thomas Academy, who were state semifinalists in Class AA last season, stands 7-1-3.
