Chaska tops St. Thomas Academy in high school hockey opener

Chaska’s Sam Scheetz scored a power-play goal in the third period to give the Hawks a 4-3 win over St. Thomas Academy in the season opener. in Bloomington Scheetz scored his first varsity goal with 6:36 remaining in the third period. Chaska goalie Carter Wishart had 28 saves.

Chaska got on the board first when Sam Spehar found the back of the net with a power-play goal. His dad is ex-Gopher Dave Spehar.
St. Thomas Academy scored back-to-back goals, courtesy of Macalester Dose and captain Jack Strobel. Hawks forward Jack Seaverson tied the game at two with a goal before the end of the second period.
Chaska’s Zach Seltun gave the Hawks the lead again after cleaning up a miss in the crease. Jack Strobel scored his second goal of the game that tied the game, 3-3.
With the intensity heating up, that’s when Scheetz scored the game-winner. The Hawks defense tightened up and didn’t let up a goal when the Cadets pulled their goalie late.
Chaska will face Duluth East on Saturday at 3 p.m., while St. Thomas Academy will take on Cretin-Derham Hall at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Bloomington Ice Garden.
