Anoka brothers, both WWII veterans, get 2nd dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Delmar and Richard Schmelzer have a lot in common.

They’re both in their 90s, they both World War II veterans, and now they’re both fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The brothers, who both live in Anoka, got their second shot of the COVID-19 vaccine Sunday at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital.

Delmar, 94, served in the Navy and worked in the engine room of an aircraft carrier. Richard, 99, was an Army radio operator on planes that trained new pilots, according to Nancy Goodman, Delmar’s daughter.

A total of four Schmelzer brothers served in the military.
