Jury finds New Hope man guilty in deadly hit-and-run

A Hennepin County jury found a 35-year-old New Hope man guilty in a deadly August 2020 hit-and-run.

Following nine hours of deliberations, the jury found Said Maye guilty of one count of unintentional second-degree murder. He was found not guilty of intentional second-degree murder, according to court records.

The crash happened Aug. 24, 2020, around 2:25 a.m. at the intersection of Franklin and Lyndale avenues in Minneapolis. According to the criminal complaint, Maye hit and pinned 31-year-old Idris Yussuf against Yussuf’s car as he was walking to it following a fight between the two at a nearby bar. Maye then drove off from the scene.

A warrant was issued. Maye was arrested while trying to flee the county a few weeks after the incident.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 10.
