Volunteers build shelters to help stray cats survive as winter weather begins

Volunteers in Princeton helped build shelters aimed at helping the survival of feral cats this winter on Sunday.

Ruff Start Rescue hosted the event where community members constructed straw-lined boxes for outside cats to warm up in as temperatures begin to drop in Minnesota.

Feral cats, who have adapted to life outdoors, try to stay warm by hiding under parked cars or in similar dangerous spots, Ruff Start said. These cat houses help protect the animals from freezing wind and keep them warm to save their lives.

The event aimed to educate families, fosters and volunteers about feral cats and trap-neuter-return while getting hands-on experience crafting the shelters.

Once the cat houses are finished, Ruff Start will distribute them throughout the community.
