1 arrested after stabbing, hourslong standoff in Belgrade

One person was hospitalized and another was arrested after a stabbing and subsequent standoff in Belgrade on Monday.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said Belgrade and Brooten police received a welfare check request at a home in the 100 block of Washburn Avenue at about 10:10 a.m. The caller told authorities a picture showed a female inside the home who’d been stabbed.

Police and deputies responded, set up a perimeter and contacted the people inside to begin negotiations. Around noon, the female was released from the home and taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening stab wounds.

A SWAT team was also called to the scene and negotiators continued to talk with a 35-year-old Deer Creek man who was inside the home. After several hours, the man came outside and was taken into custody at about 6 p.m.

He was taken to a hospital for evaluation of injuries and then booked at Stearns County Jail on second-degree assault, false imprisonment and threats of violence.

An investigation remains ongoing.
