FDA announces recall for enoki mushrooms due to contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a recall on Monday for all cases of enoki mushrooms from Sun Hong Foods due to contamination of listeria.

According to the release, the product is being recalled due to the potential contamination of listeria, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death.

The statement says that listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Enoki mushrooms are white with long stems and small caps. They are usually sold in clusters.

The affected products are sold in clear plastic bags with green panels. Labeling on the front of the packaging will carry the UPC code: 7 426852 625810.

Sun Hong Foods became aware of this issue after notification by FDA that samples of the product tested by the state of Michigan were found to be positive for listeria
