Maya Angelou, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, Dr. Sally Ride and Anna May Wong are the newest faces of U.S. quarters.
The U.S. Mint plans to issue the quarters featuring the five women until 2025 as a part of the American Women Quarters Program that will begin in 2022. The program intends to celebrate the contributions and achievements of notable American women.
The U.S. Mint will create up to five new designs each year until 2025. Each will feature a woman with accomplishments from civil rights to abolition, suffrage, government, humanities, space, science and the arts.
Angelou was a performer, writer and social activist, known for her autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Mankiller was the first woman to be elected as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation and was a women’s and Native American rights activist.
Ride was an astronaut, physicist, teacher and the first American woman to go to space in the 1983 Space Shuttle Challenger. Otero-Warren was a leader in the New Mexico suffrage movement and Santa Fe public schools’ first female superintendent.
Wong was the first Chinese American movie star in Hollywood, appearing in more than 60 movies throughout her lifetime, including one of the first films made in Technicolor.
