Man charged in fatal pedestrian-involved crash in downtown Minneapolis

A man has been charged in a pedestrian-involved crash in downtown Minneapolis on May 24 that killed one and injured another.

Thomas Lenard Hunter, 24, is charged via warrant with one count of criminal vehicular homicide and one count of criminal vehicular operation, according to court documents.

The crash happened at the intersection of Marquette Avenue and 10th Street.

At about 5:42 p.m. on May 24, according to the criminal complaint, Hunter was attempting to make his way into the valet bay of the Hilton Hotel off of Marquette Avenue.

After making multiple different turns in and out of the valet bay, Hunter made a right-hand turn out of the bay, went around the cars stopped at the red light and into oncoming traffic on 10th Street, the complaint states.

He was then hit by an oncoming vehicle that had the right away, sending him spinning into a traffic light post. The back end of his vehicle then spun onto the sidewalk, hitting two pedestrians and sending them through a glass window, the criminal complaint states.

Stephan Micheal Rice, 62, of Burnsville, was one of the pedestrians. He didn’t survive the crash, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner.

The other victim, who was not identified, was sent to Hennepin County Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries, according to the complaint.
