Klobuchar reveals stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis, says treatment went well

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has revealed she was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer earlier this year.

In a post, Klobuchar, 61, said doctors detected the cancer during a routine mammogram in February. The senator said she had the cancer removed.

She also underwent radiation in May and said that treatment went well.

Klobuchar said her cancer was stage 1A, meaning it had not spread beyond the breast. She said she felt fortunate to have caught it early because she had delayed her mammogram because of the pandemic. She urged Americans not to delay health screenings.

Klobuchar said in her post that doctors believe her chances of developing cancer again "are no greater than the average person."

In her post, Klobuchar said, in part, "Like often happens with anyone dealing with illness, this experience gave me time to reflect on my own life and those I love. It also gave me renewed purpose to my work. I have immense gratitude for my family, friends, colleagues, and the people of Minnesota, and I know that each day is a gift. Thank you for your support."
