Many 4A boys hoops teams like their chances to win a state championship and Wayzata is no exception.
The team has the experience, depth and has played well against other top teams. The Trojans have juniors Cam Heide and Carter Bjerke leading the charge.
"I’ve known Cam (Heide) since he was in the fifth grade. I coached his older brother, as well. Cam is a tremendous player – he’ll agree he needs to get better. If he continues to put in the work, he’ll be a great high school and college player," said Bryan Schnettler, Wayzata boys basketball coach.

Currently, Wayzata is at 5-2, but this is a team that’s played a long time together and will get better as the season goes along. The two losses are vs. Hopkins and Minnehaha Academy, the latter, a 3A team, is considered the best in the state.
"We feel we can contend for a state title, but right now we just need to have a great practice today and build upon that every day," said Cam Heide, Wayzata junior wing.
"We’re very battle-tested. We played Hopkins and Minnehaha Academy. Minnehaha, I’d say, is the best team in the state, regardless of class it was fun to play against them. We’re battle-tested and our plan is to win out the rest of the season," said Carter Bjerke, Wayzata junior big man.
Heide is a highly coveted junior who’s being recruited by Minnesota, Arizona, Purdue, Creighton, Iowa, and other high major programs.
Bjerke is a 6’9" center/forward who has a D-1 offer from St. Thomas and is receiving interest from Ivy and Patriot League programs.
