Media pushes for juror names in Chauvin trial to be released

The Media Coalition — of which 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS is a member — is pushing for the release of the jurors’ names in the Derek Chauvin trial. The coalition includes a majority of local media affiliates, including FOX, KARE, WCCO, the Star Tribune, MPR, as well as multiple national outlets such as the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Washington Post and others.

In a court document filed on Wednesday, the coalition says it waited through the trial, verdict and sentencing, and then another three months before asking for the jurors’ identities to be revealed.

"…the Court should immediately disclose the jurors’ identities to the press and public, and it should unseal the related Juror Materials, including the prospective juror list, juror profiles, juror questionnaires, and the unredacted verdict forms," the filing in Hennepin County states, in part.

There is a court precedent for jurors’ identities to be made public following a court case.
