Hopkins girls hoops look to continue dominance under new head coach

The Hopkins Royals girls basketball team is set to play its first game of the 2021 season on Friday night against Eden Prairie. They enter with a 63-game win streak. And, under new head coach Tara Starks.

Last March, the Royals were set to play in the Class 4A girls’ basketball championship. However, the game was not able to be played due to COVID-19 shutting down high school sports. Since that day, longtime head coach Brian Cosgriff retired from Hopkins after 21 seasons and seven state championships.

The Royals tabbed Tara Starks for the head coaching position in August. Starks is familiar with Hopkins, due to her coaching an AAU team with multiple Royal players on the team. Starks’ daughter also played at Hopkins.

Hopkins comes into the season with high expectations. The Royals return a lot of talent, including Amaya Battle, Taylor Woodson, and Maya Nnaji.

Hopkins faces Eden Prairie at 7 pm Friday inside the Lindbergh Center.
