Gophers men’s hockey opens 100th season with 4-1 win over Penn St.
The Gophers men’s hockey program opened their 100th season with a 4-1 win over Penn State Thursday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
After a scoreless first period, Minnesota got a pair of goals in the second from Jonny Sorenson and Scott Reedy. Kevin Wall scored Penn State’s lone goal of the game with 26 seconds remaining in the second period to cut the Gophers lead to 2-1.
Minnesota closed out the Nittany Lions with a strong third period with goals from Cullen Munson and Sampo Ranta and the Gophers won it 4-1. Goalie Jack LaFontaine made 27 saves for the maroon and gold.
The Gophers outshot Penn State 28-27.
Minnesota and Penn State close out the first series of the season on Friday, Nov. 20 at 3:00 p.m. CT.
