Wednesday’s Minnesota United match vs. Chicago postponed due to presumptive COVID-19 positive case

Just hours before kickoff was scheduled to take place at Allianz Field in St Paul, Minnesota United’s match against the Chicago Fire was postponed due to another COVID-19 positive among United’s roster of players.

The official announcement from the team stated, "Major League Soccer announced today that tonight’s Minnesota United match against Chicago Fire FC at Allianz Field has been postponed due to a suspected case of COVID-19 among the Minnesota United team.

"The match was postponed to allow for further testing and evaluation."

It’s the second straight postponed match for the Loons after Sunday’s match in Dallas was called off after two United players tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

The club had had clean test results ever since, until a rapid result test came back positive on Wednesday.

The rapid result test will be confirmed with a conventional swab test which takes longer to deliver results, but the game was postponed as a precaution.

Neither postponed match has been rescheduled.

With some MLS teams facing multiple rescheduled games, there is the potential for teams to end the season playing a different number of games. Should that happen, MLS is likely to determine playoff seeding by each team’s standing points on a per-game basis.

Major League Soccer’s policy is to not identify players who have confirmed positive tests. They are required to quarantine for 14 days, which means the United players stand to at least three games. It could be more if the postponed Chicago and Dallas games are rescheduled to be played in the next 14 days.
