With H.S. football set for spring, 7-on-7 leagues fill the void

With the pandemic shuffling Minnesota’s high school football season to the spring, "7-on-7" passing leagues are filling the void this fall. Typically held in spring or summer, the passing-heavy and two-hand-touch format allows teams to get reps without full contact.

The My7on7 Passing League has 32 Minnesota High School teams from across the state competing on a weekly basis.

Four divisions including Freshman, Varsity AA, AAA, AAAA make up the 32-team league.

Among the rules that make 7=on-7 work – interceptions are worth three points.

In one of the games on opening day, the S-M-B Wolfpack took on the Forest Lake Rangers. SMB started the scoring when quarterback Charlie Johnson hit Trent Finney to make it 7-0. Johnson then found Judah Thomas to make it 14-0 Wolfpack.

But, the Rangers answered back when Caleb Kasa found Seth DuPaul to make it a 14-7 game. However, SMB answered back when Johnson connected with the Delone Lohnes to push the lead to 21-7. Kasa and Forest Lake made it 21-14 when Andrew Sykora hauled in a touchdown pass.

Toward the end of the game, Johnson again connected with Finney to make it a 28-14 SMB lead. Then, SMB intercepted a pass to make it a 31-14 final.

Next game, the Rochester Mayo Spartans took on the Eden Prairie Eagles. On the first play of the game, Rochester’s Bennett Ellsworth hit Cayden Holcomb on a deep pass to make it 7-0 Spartans. From that point on, it was a defensive battle. Rochester picked off Eden Prairie four times to cruise to a 19-9 victory.
