St. Louis Park native and Class of 2021 catcher Sam Hunt has spent some time this summer competing vs. minor league pitchers who saw their seasons canceled. The pros gather on Fridays at Minnetonka high school for simulated games.

Some of the pitchers include Jake Irvin (Nats organization), Tom Windle (Red Sox organization), Sam Thoresen (Cubs organization), Dalton Sawyer (A’s organization), and Jake Stevenson (Reds organization).

Hunt stumbled upon the professionals, and has since had a chance to hit against them, and catch them. For a 17-year-old, getting to compete against pros many years older has helped Hunt earn valuable experience.

KSTP Sports’ Darren Wolfson featured Hunt and his fascinating summer on Thursday’s Nightcast.

Hunt started high school at St. Louis Park, but transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida for his 11th and 12th grade years. He’ll graduate high school next June, and if he’s not a high pick in the MLB Draft, will play in college for Vanderbilt.

Hunt is a switch-hitter, and while catcher is his main position, he also can play first and third base.
