Q&A: Twins legend Tom Kelly on Opening Day and Twins’ World Series chances

Former manager Tom Kelly, who led the Twins to two World Series titles, talked with KSTP Sports’ Darren Wolfson on Friday about Opening Day, the Twins’ 2020 chances, Rocco Baldelli, the new rules, and more.

Kelly won World Series titles with the Twins in 1987 and 1991, their only championships. Minnesota’s record under Kelly was 1,140-1,244. He led the Twins to their first World Championship over the Cardinals in 1987. A second World Series title followed in 1991 after a drama-filled Game 7 victory over the Braves.
A native of Minnesota, Kelly has more than a 45-year association with the Twins. He spent part of one season playing with the Twins in 1975 and spent years in the minor leagues. Then he rose through the minor-league ranks as a coach and manager, and Kelly then became Minnesota’s third-base coach in 1983 as a member of Billy Gardner’s staff. He was honored in 2017 with a bronze statue outside Target Field.
Kelly turns 70-years-old on August 15.
