Wisconsin superintendent released from federal custody, placed on house arrest

Daniel Peggs, the superintendent of schools in Altoona, Wisconsin, has been released from federal custody, Altoona Police Chief Kelly Bakken told ABC affiliate WQOW Monday.

Peggs was indicted last week on child sex crimes.

The indictment alleges from October 2015 through May 2016, Peggs recruited, enticed, harbored, transported and maintained a girl under 18 years of age while knowing she'd be caused to engage in a commercial sex act.

It also alleges that in December 2015, Peggs used the minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct to produce a video of child pornography using his cellphone.

Bakken told WQOW the judge did not require Peggs to post a bond but is requiring him to be on GPS monitoring and house arrest. Bakken added he will reside in Oregon, Wisconsin, which is in Dane County.

On Friday, Altoona School Board President Robin Elvig said if Peggs was released Monday he would be placed on administrative leave. That means he is not allowed on school property or at school functions.
