With most COVID-19 restrictions lifted and cases trending down, some pandemic challenges appear to be coming to an end.
In Minnesota, 65% of the state population is vaccinated, which is nearing Gov. Tim Walz’s 70% goal. Meanwhile, the United States is reporting fewer than 20,000 new cases per day, which is the lowest number in more than a year.
People across Minnesota, and the country, are hoping this summer will feel more like life before the pandemic.
"It’s amazing to finally have some normalcy in our lives and to really be able to socialize again," Caiti Pothen said.
"It’s been since 2019 probably so it’s to nice to be able to enjoy the summer for a change again," Paul Strzalkowski added.
Many state business owners said that if the Memorial Day holiday weekend was any sign of the times, this summer is looking up.
The manager of Tally’s Dockside in White Bear Lake said there is hope in the pick up seen in sales.
"The lake has been really busy," Connar Dehnert said. "I feel like it’s going to be way more busy than usual and they’re probably going to make a ton of money this year so good for everyone right?"
This time last year, Tally’s Dockside—like many restaurants in the state—wasn’t even open. So while business looks to be picking up, they say they have a long way to go to make up for the losses they saw last year.
