Family seeks answers after hit-and-run crash leaves grandmother with serious injuries

There’s a plea for answers one month after a grandmother was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in St. Paul.

It happened close to her home along Rice Street near West Sycamore Street. Now, the family of 57-year-old Carolyn Edwards is hoping for answers.

"It’s just been really hard for us, we’ve been taking it one day at a time," Sari Edwards, Carolyn’s daughter, said.

Sari said her mother is still in critical condition at the hospital. Officials said she suffered a brain bleed, a pelvic fracture and other internal injuries.

"She’s opening and closing her eyes, and we’re just hoping for the best," Sari said.

St. Paul Police said the driver hit Edwards while she was walking in the 800 block of Rice Street at around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 1. Carolyn Edwards told investigators the driver who hit her stopped, checked on her and then sped off.

"You get back in the car and then you drive off? That’s ridiculous," Sari Edwards said.

Police believe the vehicle that hit her is a silver Dodge Caravan. The windshield on the vehicle was damaged on the driver’s side. Plus, there are distinct rust marks and a damaged bumper from the crash.

"It’s been 30 days, it’s been a whole month, how are you even sleeping at night? I don’t wish bad on anybody but I said it, yes I did, I hope he’s been tormented every night," Sari said.

Sari said she calls her mom two to three times every day but, because of COVID-19, visiting just isn’t the same.

"We just continue to pray that, while she’s in this coma, God is repairing and fixing everything that needs to be fixed," Sari said.

As Sari and her family wait for answers, they’re confident her mom will make a full recovery and they’ll get the justice they deserve.

"You’re waking up every day knowing what you did, just turn yourself in," Sari said.
