Grandmother of 2-year-old shot, killed in St. Paul speaks out

Rosalind Loggin told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she has a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the shooting death of her 2-year-old grandson, Jayse Wilson, who St. Paul Police and prosecutors said died of a gunshot wound to the head Dec. 23 inside an apartment on the 800 block of Rice Street.

"I just want to know, we all want to know, what really happened that day, because a baby has needlessly died," Loggin said. "I mean there are parts of this story that just don’t add up and I have not been able to get my questions answered yet."

In criminal charges, prosecutors said 39-year-old, Earl Williams, is responsible for the death of Wilson and faces a second-degree manslaughter charge for leaving a loaded weapon unattended, and therefore was negligent. He also faces additional charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Loggin said she would like to know why the criminal complaint stated Williams left the apartment about 10 minutes after the shooting and asked several other young children to give CPR to the young boy.

"Why was the gun left in the bathroom and who was watching Jayse to make sure he was not near the gun," Loggin asked. "And why did Williams not stay in the apartment to talk with police?"

St. Paul Police said the medical examiner has ruled the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Jayse Wilson’s third birthday is Monday, and Loggin said her faith is keeping her spirits up.

"I just want know what happened and what we can do to prevent this from happening to someone else’s child," said Loggin. "Jayse would have been three today and instead of celebrating a birthday, we are planning a burial."
